1. A god among men. / A prince among thieves.
Show me that one person who is different from the rest, or the purity in the dirt and the heart in Hell.
2. Martyrdom.
Death for one's beliefs is a strong message for those who oppose. Show me someone who is willing to give everything they know for the one cause they believe in. This does not just have to be about religion, but any type of belief in something, whether it is reform, change, unification, secession, etc.
3. One to represent all.
Let me see the story of the king who fell for his kingdom, of the father who faced the gods to protect his family, the innocent child who said no.
4. Misconceptions.
Let me behind the scenes, entered into a foreign world where stereotypes wage war on truth. Show me that guy from a feared culture who is not a barbarian, or that group who fights to demolish the misconceptions.
5. More than what you see.
Sure, on first glance, that agent who pulled you from the train and locked you in his car may be rough, but under that strong exterior, show me who he really is, what his secrets are and how he lives his life outside his job.
6. Public moments in a character's or characters' plight, involving but not limited to humiliation, torture, chases, and call-outs.
Show me what happens when a criminal living a perfect life as a teacher is suddenly arrested in front of his students. Show me that moment on stage when secrets are revealed to a roomful of people. Let me see what happens when a character is chased through a public place, making his plight known to strangers he knows he cannot trust.
7. All in the hands of one.
One person to deal with the problem. Everything that needs to happen, everything that needs to be saved - in the hands of one person. Show me the stress, the drama, and the life of the One.
8. All for one.
They know him, they see him not as dangerous, but as a gentle friend who has been with them for a long while. When he is threatened, show me how they band together to protect him. Show me a town that hides its leader from invasion, or the company that protects its number one shareholder from the police.
9. Tearing down or breaking walls, boundaries, borders, fences, gates, etc.
Sometimes, to get to the meat of the story or the motives behind the character, barriers may need to be town down. Show me the persistent character or that one thing that breaks the stony wall a character builds between himself and the rest of the world.
10. The definition of and what it means: Heroism and heroes, religion and faith, being alive, being a family, being human, leading and leaders, freedom, peace, being the last, being the first, change, prejudice and acceptance, etc.
In the words of Hoobastank, "Show me what it's for / Make me understand it." Show me what it means to be a family, or to be a hero. Perception is key here - show me the homeless character who sacrifices himself to save a child, or the character whose faith is all he has to live on. If someone can capture the connection and emotion between the Master and the Doctor in the Series Three finale of Doctor Who (The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords), I will be thoroughly grateful. I had to put that in there. I'm sorry.
